Materials Needed

  • Yarn: 180 meters of 3mm thick polyester or cotton cord (or any medium/bulky weight yarn that matches your hook).
  • Hook: 4 mm crochet hook.
  • Tools: Scissors, 2 Stitch Markers, Tapestry Needle.
  • Optional: “Handmade” tag or label.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • Ch: Chain
  • Sc: Single Crochet (UK term: Double Crochet)
  • BLO: Back Loop Only
  • St(s): Stitch(es)
  • Sl St: Slip Stitch

Dimensions & Customization(crochet phone bag)

  • Length: Determined by the starting chain. The default pattern (Ch 90) creates a long strap suitable for a crossbody fit.
  • To make the strap longer/shorter: Increase or decrease the starting chain number.
  • To make the pocket deeper: Increase the number of stitches worked before the strap split (currently 23 stitches).
  • Width: Determined by the number of rows.
  • This bag is 67cm in length and 9 cm width

Instructions

Make 2 Identical Panels

Foundation

Row 1: Start with a slip knot. Chain 90. Turn the chain to work into the back bumps (the third loop behind the V). Sc 1 in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across. (Total: 89 sts)

(Total: 89 sts)

Row 3 – 6: Repeat Row 2.

(You should now have 6 rows of ribbing total)

Creating the Strap Opening (The Split)

Before starting Row 7, place your stitch markers to guide the gap:

  1. Count 23 stitches from the end where you just finished Row 6. Place a marker in the 23rd stitch. (This section will become the Phone Pocket).
  2. Go to the opposite end of the row. Count 6 stitches from the edge. Place a marker in the 6th stitch. (This section acts as the top connector).
  3. The space between markers should be 60 stitches (this will become the Strap).

Row 7:

  1. Ch 1, turn. Sc 1 in the BLO of the first stitch and continue until you reach the first marker (23 sts).
  2. Work a Sc in the marked stitch. Remove marker.
  3. Chain 60 (Make these chains fairly tight, not loose).
  4. Skip the next 60 stitches on the row below.
  5. Locate the second marker at the other end. Work 1 Sc in that marked stitch.

  1. Sc 1 in the BLO of the remaining 5 stitches.
(You now have a solid piece at both ends connected by a long chain bridge).

Second Side (Solid Ribbing)

Row 8:

  1. Ch 1, turn. Sc 1 in the BLO of the first 6 stitches.
  2. Work 1 Sc into the back loop of each of the 60 chains.

  1. Work 1 Sc in the BLO of the last 23 stitches.
    (Total: 89 sts)

Row 9 – 13: Ch 1, turn. Work 1 Sc in the BLO of each stitch across.

(Repeat this until you have 6 rows on this side of the strap opening, mirroring the first side).

Finishing the Panel: Fasten off.

  • For the first panel: Cut the yarn.
  • For the second panel: Leave a very long tail (approx. 1 meter) for sewing the pieces together.

Assembly

  1. Align: Place the two panels directly on top of each other, ensuring the 23-stitch sections (pocket) and 6-stitch sections (top) align perfectly.

  1. Sewing: Using your tapestry needle and the long tail:
  • Sew the outer edges of the panels together using a whip stitch or your preferred joining method.

  • Pocket Section (23 sts): Sew along the bottom edge and up the side edge.
  • Strap Section: Sew along the edges of the long strap to fuse the two panels, making the strap sturdy.
  • Top Connector (6 sts): Sew around the edges of the small top section.
  1. Opening: Ensure you do not sew the “inner” loop where the phone slides in (the transition between the 23-stitch block and the strap).
  2. Hide Ends: Weave in any remaining loose tails inside the pocket or between the layers.

Final Touches

  • Attach a “Handmade” tag to the front of the pocket section if desired.
  • Your phone pocket is ready to wear!
